Client Holiday Gifts That Get Remembered
Client holiday gifts are the one marketing spend where the recipient can tell instantly whether you meant it. A branded desk toy says you had a budget line to clear. A bottle of something generic says you bought 200 of them. Something the client actually wanted says you paid attention.
The gap between those outcomes is not money. It is choice, timing and a bit of thought about who you are sending to. Here is how to get client holiday gifts right this year, including the parts most companies get wrong.
Start planning client holiday gifts in September, not December
The single biggest predictor of whether client holiday gifts land is when you started. Teams that decide in late November end up choosing from whatever is still available, paying rush shipping, and sending in the third week of December when every inbox and reception desk is buried.
Working back from a mid-December arrival, a comfortable timeline looks like this. In September you set the budget and the client list. In October you agree the tiers and what each tier receives. In early November you collect any missing details and brief whoever is sending. By late November everything is scheduled. December is for the follow-up conversation, which is the part that actually generates revenue.
If you send digitally, this timeline compresses to almost nothing, which is one of the underrated arguments for it. You can decide on 10 December and still deliver on 10 December.
Client gifting carries obligations that vary by the recipient's employer, industry and country. Three checks are worth running before you send anything.
Recipient gift policies. Many corporates cap what an employee may accept, commonly somewhere between 50 and 150 in local currency, and some require declaration above a threshold. Public sector, healthcare, financial services and defence clients often have stricter rules or an outright ban. Sending above someone's cap puts them in an awkward position, which is the opposite of the intended effect.
Anti-bribery law. In the UK, gifts and hospitality fall within the Bribery Act 2010. The Ministry of Justice guidance is clear that hospitality, gifts and promotional expenditure are not prohibited unless intended as a bribe, but that the more lavish the expenditure beyond what is reasonable in the circumstances, the greater the inference that it was meant to influence improper performance. Expenditure that is concealed, or not clearly connected to legitimate business activity, invites the same inference. The joint prosecution guidance from the Serious Fraud Office and the Director of Public Prosecutions sets out how those cases are assessed. In the US, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act applies where foreign officials are involved.
Your own tax treatment. Business gift deductibility is capped, and the cap is low. The IRS limits the business gift deduction to $25 per recipient per tax year, excluding items costing $4 or less that carry your permanently engraved business name and are distributed regularly. Anything that could be treated as entertainment rather than a gift is generally treated as entertainment and is not deductible at all. The IRS also requires timely records proving the business purpose, a description of the gift, the amount and the date. Treat deductibility as a record-keeping obligation rather than a reason to send.
The practical upshot for client holiday gifts: keep values reasonable and proportionate, keep a record of who received what and why, and give the recipient a way to decline gracefully. A digital gift that a recipient can simply not redeem is much easier to decline than a hamper sitting on their desk.
Client holiday gift ideas that hold up
The client holiday gifts that work share one quality. The recipient chose them.
An experience the client picks. A dinner, a spa afternoon, a track day, a cookery class, a hotel night. It converts a transaction into a story they tell someone, and it works across cultures because they choose within their own market.
Something for their family, not their desk. Client relationships are personal. A gift the recipient can share at home tends to be remembered longer than anything that lives in an office.
A charitable donation in their name, where policy blocks gifts. For clients whose employers prohibit gifts, a donation with a note is often permitted and lands well. Check first.
A genuinely good consumable. If you insist on something physical, make it excellent and small rather than large and average.
What to avoid: branded merchandise, anything requiring assembly, anything perishable shipped internationally, alcohol without knowing the recipient, and gift cards for retailers that do not trade in the client's country.
Why client holiday gifts break down internationally
Client lists tend to be more international than employee lists, which makes physical sending harder. Customs delays around the holidays are at their worst exactly when you need delivery. Duty is sometimes charged to the recipient. Corporate addresses are unreliable in a hybrid world, and a parcel sent to an office your client visits twice a month may sit unopened until January.
A digital experience gift removes all of it. You send to an email address, the recipient opens a link, and they choose from a catalogue available in their own country, in their own language and currency. Nothing ships, nothing is delayed and nothing arrives broken.
There is a dignity point too. A gift that never displays a price avoids the awkwardness of a client knowing exactly what you spent, and lets you run different tiers across one list without anyone comparing notes.
Budgets: what companies actually spend on client holiday gifts

How to send client holiday gifts with Mojo Gift
Client holiday gifts run on the same platform as employee recognition, so one supplier and one invoice covers both.
You upload a client list or send individually, set a value per tier, and add a personal note per recipient. Each client receives an email with a Mojo Experience Card. They choose from a local catalogue across 190 countries in 50 languages, and a 24/7 concierge helps them book. No price is ever shown, nothing expires, and if a client wants something the catalogue does not carry, they can request it.
For strategic accounts, concierge delivery handles scheduling and any special requests directly. Larger client programmes usually run through the client and partner gifting programme, and higher-value relationships often sit under executive and VIP gifting.
Gift value is funded at face value, so a $100 card costs $100, with no markup, no per-card fee and no commission. Because nothing expires, you are never charged for value a client did not redeem. The pricing page has the full model.
Sending to employees as well as clients
Most companies run both at once in Q4, and running them separately doubles the admin for no benefit. If you are also organising staff gifts, corporate holiday gifts for employees covers the employee side, including the tax positions that differ from client gifting. The Mojo Moment Programme covers employees at $25 per Mojo Moment, per year, from a 50-Moment minimum, while client gifting can run alongside it on the same account.
Frequently asked questions
What are good client holiday gifts?
The best client holiday gifts let the recipient choose. An experience gift, a dinner, a hotel night or a wellbeing treat lands better than branded merchandise because it feels personal and the client gets something they actually wanted. Digital delivery also avoids the shipping delays that undermine December gifting.
How much should you spend on a client holiday gift?
Set values by relationship tier rather than sending everyone the same amount. Check the recipient's own gift policy first, since many corporates cap what employees may accept and some require declaration above a threshold. Keeping values reasonable and documented is the safest approach.
When should you send client holiday gifts?
Aim for arrival between late November and mid-December, before the final-week inbox crush. Physical gifts need decisions made by early October to allow for production and international shipping. Digital experience gifts can be sent the same day, which removes the deadline entirely.
Are client holiday gifts tax deductible?
Only to a very limited extent. The IRS caps the business gift deduction at $25 per recipient per tax year, and anything treated as entertainment rather than a gift is not deductible. Keep timely records of recipient, description, amount, date and business purpose for every gift you send, since the IRS requires them. Confirm the position in your own jurisdiction with your accountant.
Can you send client holiday gifts internationally?
Yes, if you send digitally. Physical gifts face customs delays and duty charges that peak in December. A digital experience card is delivered by email and redeemed against a local catalogue in the client's own country, language and currency, which removes shipping from the equation entirely.
